Carousel Themed Floral Centerpieces For Birthday Party

Glenwood Weber Design helped celebrate another jaw dropping birthday party for a previous client who’s one year old daughter had a hot air balloon themed birthday party. The client’s daughter was celebrating her 2nd birthday party and wanted a carousel themed party. We are so excited to share the details of the party and the impressive decor our client handmade for the special event. The birthday party required  several top industry professionals to create the client’s vision. Glenwood Weber Design was one of this professionals asked to do the flowers for the event, everything from the table centerpieces to the over scale numeric 2 covered in flowers. To our surprise, Kara’s Party Ideas  featured the 2 year old’s carousel-themed birthday party and all of it’s decor on their website

Below are images taken from the birthday party provided by Photography by Costas. You can also visit our Event page for more exclusive images.

This special event was centered around carousels. The party room was decorated in luxurious hues of pink, gold and ivory. Each table featured a centerpiece of a floating golden horse and a beautiful lush floral arrangement laying directly underneath.

“Glenwood [helped bring] my vision to life… he completely blew me away when he walked in the night before the party with the [the floral] 2. It was jaw dropping.”

Succulents Botanical Artwork Featured in Glenbrook Valley Home Tour

Glenwood Weber Design’s succulents were featured in the Glenbrook Valley Home Tour October 1-2, 2016 in Houston. Interior designers and enthusiasts alike had the opportunity to walk through a mid-century modern time capsule. Featured were mid-century modern homes, ranging from 1,300 to nearly 6,000 sq ft. For more information, visit Glenbrook Valley’s online newsletter: http://www.glenbrookvalley.org.

Succulents As Botanical Artwork: Bold. Dramatic.

Houston interior designer, Ben Johnston consulted with GWD to collaborate on an upcoming design show. Ben’s project was being showcased in the Glenbrook Valley Home Tour.  This annual event celebrates the retro designs of Houston homes built in the 1950’s.

Ben discussed using an incredible art vessel from his collection. Johnston wanted Glenwood Weber Design to use this container filled with succulents for his showcase. This vessel was a faux-concrete statue head that resembled an ancient artifact. Glenwood Weber Design  transformed this object into a bold botanical enhancement using succulents and euphorbia. It was showcased as a focal point on a round cherrywood table underneath a dramatic black iron staircase.

Glenwood Weber Design felt very honored to be a part of Ben Johnston’s showcase. Glenwood welcomes more collaborations between he and the interior designer in the future. You can have your home or office transformed by Ben Johnston at Benjamin Johnston Design. He can be reached over the phone at (713) 876-0432 or via email, Ben@Benjamin-johnston.com

Glenwood Weber Design brings Botanical Art Workshop to Houston area Design Within Reach Store

Glenwood Weber instructs group on Botanical Art in Houston DWR Design store

Botanical Art Workshop held  in Houston’s Design Within Reach

Glenwood Weber from Glenwood Weber Design led an informative workshop on how to construct various Botanical Art Concepts using succulents, epiphytes and driftwood in March 2016. The lunch & learn was held at the Houston Design Within Reach store located in Highland Village Shopping Center on Westheimer. The attendees were provided with the succulent plants and driftwood materials needed to create their own botanical art.

While Glenwood instructed the group each attendant followed along designing on grapewood and a collection of five succulents as he spoke. A few people in the class chose to use large glass vessels to create a miniature landscape consisting of gravel, twigs and air-plants. The end result was an art piece created by each participant which they were able to take home after the event.

Glenwood went to the DWR design store the week prior to his event and designed on large samples of driftwood, ghostwood and over-scaled glass jars using his own collection of succulents, Epiphytes and air-plants. Glenwood designed pieces for the space considering the tabletop surfaces and the surrounding furniture. He took his inspiration from colors and textures within the Design Within Reach furniture product line and created succulent art suitable for the store’s vignettes.

The worship was such a huge success that the Design Within Reach invited Glenwood Weber to demonstrate another succulent workshop at their store. Glenwood also spoke on a topic for a separate lunch & learn called “Landscape Love” as part of the summer design series during the month of July.

Glenwood Weber Design would like to send a special thank you to the Design Within Reach staff and sales to for hosting the workshop and to Collina’s Italian Cafe for catering. Be sure to support your local businesses and pass on the word.

Designing Beautiful Spaces with Artificial Sod: An Alternative to Real Grass

Artificial Sod Installations by Glenwood Weber Design

Artificial Sod with Curvy Edges

Beautiful Curving Lines on Artificial Sod

Artificial Sod Installations by Glenwood Weber Design

Investing in artificial sod can be pricy initially, but it is actually a financial savings in the long run. Money saved from mowing, chemical fertilizing and pesticides helps pay for it quickly. Installing artificial sod eliminates the need to use chemical fertilizer, pesticides and water like what real grass needs. It stays green all year round, whereas real grass lays dormant in the winter months. Mowing is not required for artificial sod and watering or routine maintenance otherwise is at a minimum. A good leaf blowing across the sod’s surface on a weekly basis can keep debris from piling up. The edges can be detailed a few times a year using a wet/dry shop-vac.

Artificial Sod Install for Backyard

As with any other products there are different grades and qualities that carry various warranties. The higher the grade of the artificial sod product, the longer the lifespan. We have found the higher end products simply look the best. These top grade artificial sods also feel best underfoot. They are pet friendly, heat resistant and fade proof. The products are constantly being tested and developed with new improvements coming on the market as time goes on.

Designing Your Garden with Artificial Sod

Using artificial sod as if it were real grass and allowing it to border a planted bed can create a realistic looking alternative. Often we work with our clients to create a landscape where the grass is featured and supported by the bed plantings to give it a lush look and feel. We design with the artificial sod to enhance the landscape features.  It is not required that the artificial sod be played out in a strict line. There are applications where boxy straight edges are integral to the context of the garden. In other garden spaces — swirly, sexy lines creates excitement and movement.

Peonies: Summer’s Power Flower!

Floral Bouquet, Coral Peonies, Peach Roses, Red Mokara Orchids, Purple Passion Flower

Coral Peony, Red Mokara Orchid, Peach Spray Roses and Passion Flower Floral Bouquet Composition by Glenwood Weber Design

What Spring Produces by Bud, Summer Grows to Full Bloom

Glenwood Weber Design says goodbye to summer’s most incredible floral gift. We have been advised that somewhere around the middle of July marks the last Peonies of the season from the northwest. The majestic Peony is of course, not native to Houston’s Zone-9 climate. Peonies are grown mostly in the northwestern region of the United States they are flown in from mid-Spring through July.  Although Peonies can be imported as cut flowers from other parts of the world even during the winter months, nothing compares to what’s grown in the United States during spring in Zones-2 through 8.

Peonies Vibrant and Long Lasting Colors

Colors range from pure white to white with a blush cast through darker pinks, magentas, corals and burgundy. The lighter colors seem to be more long lasting with ‘Burgundy or Red Charm’ being the most fragile and short lived of all. The ‘Coral Charm’ can also have a shorter vase life as a cut flower than the whites or pinks. There are new ‘Yellow and Lavender Peonies’ on the market. We expect to see both the yellow and the lavender availability in the coming seasons.

Peonies can look great on their own as a statement in a vase. One color alone in mass has maximum impact in home decor, especially when the color choice accents or contrasts colors in the room.  For example, hot pink Peonies can really pop in orange or coral decor.  As shown in the pictures below, hot pink can also look dynamic against red.

What’s incredible about Peonies is how long they last as cut flowers. The secret is fresh water (changing the water daily) and cool temperatures in the room where they are displayed. The best advice Glenwood Weber Design can give is to know the source of the Peonies being purchased. A reputable supplier will have Peonies in bud form. Don’t be afraid to buy Peonies while they are completely closed. Its best to select Peonies about the size of a golf ball or slightly larger.  A smaller bud can be difficult to open and often times is too tight to fully bloom. Initially place the blooms in slightly warm water to encourage the stems to drink. After the blooms pop and open its best to give them one night in refrigeration. This will set the bloom in its fully open state and provide the longest lasting Peony bloom time.

Striking colors that defy descriptionPeonies are not only brilliant to look at, their fragrance is quiet charming as well. The essence of a Peony’s bloom scent can be subtle and fresh like clean laundry. Each variety has its own sweet personality and aromatic perfume. Growers are actually working to bring back the natural Peony sweetness which is often lost in productivity.  Like any other produce off season the blooms can be pricy. During the height of the blooming season sheer quantities drive prices down so June and July show the lowest prices of the year.

If the petals from a single bloom fall off DON’T WORRY! Gather the fallen petals and place them in your bath water. Light a few candles in your bathroom and have yourself a delightful, relaxing “Peony Petal Bath” 🙂

Power Line Safe Tree Choices in Houston

Power Line Safe Distances for Planting Trees in Houston Texas

Q: As a homeowner have you ever thought about planting a tree between the sidewalk and curb in front of your home?

Q: Have you ever considered planting a tree to provide privacy from your neighbors behind you?

Q: Did you know a tree can reach mature height within 10-15 years?

Q: Do you know when your tree reaches it’s mature height how tall it will ultimately be?

Q: Will your mature tree disturb the power lines above?

Through our efforts with various community organizations we are in the process of creating a database of trees that would be good choices for planting under Houston power lines.

Houston is the fourth largest city in the U.S. and is expected to increase exponentially over the next decade. With new construction on the rise both residential and commercial projects HAVE TO consider installing proper trees.

Landscaping should always be a part of the urban planning & design process rather than an after thought. As homeowners we have to consider our home’s foundation, swimming pools, sidewalks, fences and driveways when planting new trees. It would be smart to plant a tree knowing  it’s mature height, width and root growth. The dangers of planting trees without this mature tree height information can be hazardous.

Planting Trees Safe Distances for Clearance of Overhead Power Lines

Glenwood Weber Design Guide to Planting Trees near Power Lines

Planting Trees Safe Distances for Clearance of Overhead Power Lines

Palm Trees and Power Lines

A Palm tree planted directly under a power line spells disaster! The average height of a residential power line is 17 feet, but some are even lower. Within 10 years a palm tree can exceed 17 feet with it’s direct vertical growth habit, causing a civil fire hazard and property damage. As a safety precaution, we recommend avoiding planting palm trees directly under power lines altogether. Instead consider planting a distance of 10-15 ft. away from the power line.

Glenwood Weber chats with Houston’s OutSmart Magazine and shares Floral Home Decor Tips

Glenwood Weber of Glenwood Weber Design on the issue of OutSmart Magazine May 2013

Weekdays are super busy at Glenwood Weber Design. Because of the hectic weekly schedule, weekends are spent cleaning and organizing around the office. While going through some back issues of OutSmart Magazine, we ran across one that featured members of the Houston GLBT community. Erin Spencer and Marjory Hawkins owners of Theme Designs and Glenwood Weber are on the cover and also featured in the magazine. The piece about Glenwood talks about how to decorate with flowers and plants as well as how to use items from your own garden to enhance your home.

In honor of Pride Week in the City of Houston, Glenwood Weber Design pulls from the archives Throwback Thursday and Flashback Friday style to repost this cover article. Here is an excerpt from the article as seen in OutSmart Magazine May 2013, “Flowers Make a House a Home

Home Decor with Fragrant Blooms and Aromatic Plants

Phalaenopsis Orchid Plant Orange - Purple Blooms www.glenwoodweber.design

Can’t afford an interior decorator and new furniture, or don’t have the time to spruce up your home with fresh paint? Don’t worry sometimes the simplest little touches can make your place look new. Glenwood Weber of Glenwood Weber Design has some excellent ideas that won’t break your bank.

Glenwood does have a beautiful garden that he enjoys tending, and he says that if you have even the tiniest piece of dirt, you can plant flowers that can be used to decorate your home. “The easiest way to spruce up the indoors is if you have a flowering vine, passion flower, clematis, or sweet pea,” he says. “Just cut a few blooms and put one each in a shot glass. Put three glasses across a bathroom vanity or kitchen windowsill.”

Assorted Flowers in small vases in a circleGlenwood also suggests planting high-producing flowering or fragrant plants such as hydrangea, roses, gardenias. “With those blooms you can put little bunches in glass vases and make a collage of them on a table.” Weber suggests hitting IKEA for inexpensive glassware for your designs.

“A long line of small vases with cut flowers makes a great design for a dining room table,” Weber explains. “It’s elegant and stylish, inexpensive, and really the easiest thing to do.”

Perhaps even easier is the designer’s tip of just clipping a stem off a bush to use as foliage along a fireplace mantle. “You can decorate with potted plants indoors, too,” Glenwood says. “But be aware that they have a date stamp. People tell me they don’thave a green thumb because their plants die. You can get a nice indoor plant at any grocery store in town for twenty dollars, and if it lasts for a month, you’ve gotten your money’s worth.”

Of course, if you don’t have a garden or your own window boxes or herb pots, you can still buy cut flowers and greenery and display them in simple glassware, vases, or whatever’s on hand to perk up your abode.
Oh, and don’t be afraid of the orchids you see for sale. No, they won’t last forever – naturally they bloom as long as they bloom, but orchids are beautiful, and Weber says they are actually easy to care for. “Pop them into a decorative pot,” Weber says, “and just give it an ice cube once a week.”
