The Story: From Daylight to Twilight

When asked to come up with a concept for a styled wedding shoot for Weddings In Houston Magazine, our first idea was to create Something Blue. Using the event venue, Hughes Manor, with prominent blue interiors and exteriors, we wanted to deliver an entirely blue story. While there are few blue flowers in nature, blue is the most abundant and vibrant color in the world. Inspired by a twilight sky and a sunset over the ocean, Glenwood set off to invoke the moments he wanted to capture.

The professionals at Bright Star Productions  helped us pull together a lighting concept where our blue flowers were enhanced with ultraviolet hues, giving them a glowing effect. In the afterparty mood of the evening, our bride was highlighted like a Hollywood starlet with the room lit in a candlelight glow.

The Concept: Mesmerizing Blue Bridal Bouquet

Concept for the bridal bouquet floral was a tight, perfectly round clutch of delicate muscari grape hyacinth. With all leaves removed, we were able to create a sphere using 200 stems of this single flower. Even with as many stems as there were in the bouquet, it was still a petite, easy to grasp nosegay. This small and powerful bouquet commands attention. It’s hard to look away from these subtle, mesmerizing hues of blues.

The Look: Layers of Blue

We went to Bering’s first and found that they had a vast men’s selection with accessories of every kind. This section included stylish men’s ties, sunglasses, cuff links, unique wallets, watches, shoe shine brushes, colorful dress socks, and belts of every kind. Their table top and bridal registry department provided us with the fascinating china, chargers, stemware and silverware. We found a hand-carved, gold leaf breakfast tray for the morning after the honeymoon. This completed our concept of a slice of blue velvet wedding cake and french press coffee on the breakfast-in-bed tray. We can’t say enough good things about Bering’s; they really do have just about everything, so check them out.

The centerpiece for the men’s accessories was a striking Custom Menswear Linen Jacket created by CJ Dugas. This coat was the perfect color to tie our concept together: We imagine our groom selecting his wardrobe, choosing his boutonniere, and preparing his own fashion for the day ahead.

The Bride: Bright Cloud in a Blue Sky

Our bridal model from Neal Hamil Agency wore a couture Hayley Paige gown flown in from New York by Now & Forever Bridal Boutique. She couldn’t have been more perfect in her layered tulle dress. Vo at Now & Forever invited us to his shop to preview three dresses and the Hayley Paige gown made a major impression on us. The dress inspired us to create the petite round orb of grape hyacinths for her blue bouquet. After our model slipped into the gown, our hair and makeup stylist extraordinaire Lauren Falls with 2BPURE worked her magic. Lauren framed her face using hair pulled back low with a few curly locks swept forward over her left shoulder. With soft, natural makeup, she created a romantic look for our bride during her sunset photo shoot.

The Scene: When the Day Becomes Night

The ghost chairs, long harvest table, linens, overlay, napkins and the oversized teal glass chargers came from EB Inc Event Rentals & Design. The showroom in Humble has beautiful examples of coordinating fabric in every texture and color on the color wheel. Their super helpful and informative staff were able to guide us towards our vision. They arrived at the venue early, before anyone else, for a fast and impeccable setup. Once the photo shoot was over they stayed and helped get the space cleared and set back just the way it was before our shoot started.

Floral Wedding Table with Chargers

Photographer Kelli Durham’s vision was to capture the tablescape and flowers in natural light. First, we laid out a series of olive tree topiaries growing in tall narrow clay pottery. In each of these tiny tree pots grew a nest of small, tender succulents framed by cascading thyme herbs. Nestled between oversized mossy clay bowls, the low-mounding floral composition resonated with every color and texture of blue flower imaginable. We complemented this scene with the frosty gray swirls and velvety matte texture of tillandsia xerographica, to create drama and focal interest. Other subtle details like cut succulents placed directly on the table and fresh green moss globes, hand-tied with gold thread, help give this eclectic table scape a fresh and intriguing appeal.

The Sweet: Blue Velvet Cake

On our cake table, we displayed a two-tiered blue velvet cake baked by Erica at Wink by Erica. The ombré icing colors starts light blue and then blends into a deep rich slate blue, surrounded by fresh anemones, cornflower, hydrangea, and agapanthus blooms. Erica used real gold leaf accents and hand-made gold macarons to dot the cake top. The cake was displayed on a 1900’s Belgian ironstone stand, acquired from Bill Gardner at W Gardner, LTD.

Peonies: Summer’s Power Flower!

Floral Bouquet, Coral Peonies, Peach Roses, Red Mokara Orchids, Purple Passion Flower

Coral Peony, Red Mokara Orchid, Peach Spray Roses and Passion Flower Floral Bouquet Composition by Glenwood Weber Design

What Spring Produces by Bud, Summer Grows to Full Bloom

Glenwood Weber Design says goodbye to summer’s most incredible floral gift. We have been advised that somewhere around the middle of July marks the last Peonies of the season from the northwest. The majestic Peony is of course, not native to Houston’s Zone-9 climate. Peonies are grown mostly in the northwestern region of the United States they are flown in from mid-Spring through July.  Although Peonies can be imported as cut flowers from other parts of the world even during the winter months, nothing compares to what’s grown in the United States during spring in Zones-2 through 8.

Peonies Vibrant and Long Lasting Colors

Colors range from pure white to white with a blush cast through darker pinks, magentas, corals and burgundy. The lighter colors seem to be more long lasting with ‘Burgundy or Red Charm’ being the most fragile and short lived of all. The ‘Coral Charm’ can also have a shorter vase life as a cut flower than the whites or pinks. There are new ‘Yellow and Lavender Peonies’ on the market. We expect to see both the yellow and the lavender availability in the coming seasons.

Peonies can look great on their own as a statement in a vase. One color alone in mass has maximum impact in home decor, especially when the color choice accents or contrasts colors in the room.  For example, hot pink Peonies can really pop in orange or coral decor.  As shown in the pictures below, hot pink can also look dynamic against red.

What’s incredible about Peonies is how long they last as cut flowers. The secret is fresh water (changing the water daily) and cool temperatures in the room where they are displayed. The best advice Glenwood Weber Design can give is to know the source of the Peonies being purchased. A reputable supplier will have Peonies in bud form. Don’t be afraid to buy Peonies while they are completely closed. Its best to select Peonies about the size of a golf ball or slightly larger.  A smaller bud can be difficult to open and often times is too tight to fully bloom. Initially place the blooms in slightly warm water to encourage the stems to drink. After the blooms pop and open its best to give them one night in refrigeration. This will set the bloom in its fully open state and provide the longest lasting Peony bloom time.

Striking colors that defy descriptionPeonies are not only brilliant to look at, their fragrance is quiet charming as well. The essence of a Peony’s bloom scent can be subtle and fresh like clean laundry. Each variety has its own sweet personality and aromatic perfume. Growers are actually working to bring back the natural Peony sweetness which is often lost in productivity.  Like any other produce off season the blooms can be pricy. During the height of the blooming season sheer quantities drive prices down so June and July show the lowest prices of the year.

If the petals from a single bloom fall off DON’T WORRY! Gather the fallen petals and place them in your bath water. Light a few candles in your bathroom and have yourself a delightful, relaxing “Peony Petal Bath” 🙂
